Hammering Mosquitoes in Meditation
I’ve often heard of how when Mahavir Swami was meditating, a cowherd had hammered nails inside his ears. If anyone has meditated while bugs are biting them all over can know how irritating and non-meditative that experience makes you get… and I know I’ve heard the story a million times about Mahavir Swami but it is so much more effective to look up to Him if you actually try to practice something that He did.
Just imagine the overflowing and abundant Bliss that HE was experiencing to not react to nails in the ears while here I can’t even stay still for 15 minutes because of a little mosquito biting my feet.

He’s probably hurt on some emotional level. Or something’s not right. We often forget that GOD does not exist to serve us, it works the other way around. HIS Grace is constant, if we do not feel its presence and don’t find the purpose for it, it can be difficult. I’ve not been brought up with a GOD concept. I’m more of the Guru-Disciple and believe that our pure soul is GOD. And that a SELF REALIZED soul in any form is GOD. I can understand someone who misunderstands religion & due to hurt or emotional attacks, they lose their faith… because the faith to begin with was based on selfish interests… I’m not speaking of this person in particular… just saying I suppose.
A Soulful Exercise
Picture if you will, a moment from your childhood that caused you pain when you were 1-5 years of age.
Pause.
Now picture a happy moment from the same time.
PAUSE.
Now, picture a happy moment from your adolescence, 7-12 years of age.
Pause.
A sad one from the same span.
PAUSE.
Happy moment from teen years. 13-18.
Pause.
Sad one.

As you went through this exercise the one thing that stayed constant was YOU. The KNOWER. Knowledge is one of the infinite qualities of the soul. We are the ones that stay the same no matter how many changes come in our bodies, minds, emotions, likes and dislikes.
We are pure knowledge. Knowledge does not come from external sources to us. We are the soul.
