Health
thebigopus: My favorite song from Health — “We Are Water” This band is so intense live.  I thought they killed it at the church the other night. They aren’t reinventing music or anything, but I do really appreciate that Health could have a big impact on the rock music genre, which has been incredibly stagnant for an very long time.  They keep things fresh and interesting with plenty of...

You're in a Mumbai hut if
There’s no assurance of the next meal, indoor plumbing is a luxury you cannot afford, you draw water from a well, scrap metal is your roof and your siding, there are more people than space… …but you have 24/7 cable TV and a mobile phone with a liberal texting plan.

a mumbai moment
At the corner of ritzy neighborhood, Hughes Road in downtown Mumbai, I observed the following from a taxicab. Family of five seated on the sidewalk, fully clothed. One boy about 4-5 squatted with his pants down pooing in the sewer. His father, awake, leaned back against a wall. The mother seated, removing her dupatta. Daughter around 4-5 starts parting mother’s hair to pick out lice....

movie ticket prices
I watched UP in 3D in India. Rs. 250 per ticket. That’s Rs. 150 more than average. They charge more for Friday movies. And Rs. 150 deposit for 3d glasses which is refunded when you return the glasses. Mumbai moviegoing is expensive.

What Love Is
Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance. Prophecy and speaking in unknown languages[a] and...

"freshness"
To an native Mumbai resident known as a Mumbaiker, “Fresh” and “Safe” is better than wholesome and raw. Take milk for example, people have access to dairy fresh milk that is made organically and NOT pasteurized. But they prefer Amul milk which comes in a carton, is more expensive, is “double toned and homogenised” and has a shelf life of a few months.

– The concept from Gurudev is that no external thing or person can give you happiness since it lies within us. So when we want repeat experiences that we think bring us joy, what we’re experiencing are momentary lapses in pain/suffering.

everyone's watching
In India, everyone is watching. Today, I attended a weekly group meeting about spirituality and Jainism lead by Gurudev. After the meeting breakfast is served and there some guy poked at me and said, “hey, you were at Vodafone yesterday right? and at the temple in the morning? and you had on a hat? and shorts?” I did go to Vodafone to see about a new subscription. I did go to the...

blackboard analogy
The blackboard is always there — people can write or draw anything they desire onto it. All of that can also be erased as easily. New equations, drawings, pictures and words will grace the board in multiple colors, but the board remains independent of the writings. The board does not discriminate, the blackboard is the constant. Our soul is the blackboard. Our likes, dislikes and every...
