H.I.V. tests for everyone in the Bronx
The City of New York is doing something truly brilliant by offering an H.I.V test to all those who enter public health clinics and hospitals. I remember when I went to Bronx Science, one year a panel of people came to the school and told us that the district in which the magnet school is located has the higher percentage of AIDS in the United States. I don’t know if that statistic is still...

Marksmen are called into shoot pigeons at Wimbledon. PETA rightly protests the hideous action.

Eating green chilis got me free fillings
mbox: You’ve heard of crazy bartering stories. I’ve heard them too, but never actually tried it out on my own. Yesterday I went to sit down at Dr. Swati’s dental office as I often do when I find myself bored. We talk about everything from the local food to differences in dental school and dental practice in the U.S. & India. For some reason she had a bag of green chilis laying on her desk...

Changing of colors
Blue is a good color for peace I feel. I think I’ll be changing the colors monthly on the site. Maybe less, maybe more. But changing colors feels good, you know? There’s no rule that says that a blog can’t change colors. Maybe there is but I feel rebellious.

Quotes from reviews of "The Love Guru"
Movie Reviewers are having a field day with the “THE LOVE GURU”, which currently has a 15% on Rotten Tomatoes. I haven’t seen the movie but these reviews are the funniest I’ve ever read. Here are some of favorite ones…. Myers shamelessly steals from himself. -Philadelphia Daily News An oh-my-God-level disaster that’ll make you wonder if Hollywood actually hates us. - Time Out New York At 88...

Facebook Irony
Friend 1: once we realize that language is inherently a tool used to deceive, we begin to learn that silence speaks. 2h ago
Friend 2: just had the most amazing conversation ever.
(The above is not from a conversation. It's 2 people's status updates on Facebook that happen to be my friends but do not know one another.)

21 (Movie Review)
From the beginning shots of 21, you knew what type of movie it would be. A good one. The high intensity of gambling up close in your face, the chips worth $5000 each stacked until one can’t see anymore. Heart beats. Lights. And then some heavy punching. CUT TO: Wide shot of Lake Charles, the bridge leading towards Harvard and cars coming to & fro, with a bicycle in the foreground. This...

State of Obama
Me: I told uncle that Daddy hates Barack Obama
My sister: Has Hillary gone now? She's joined Obama's team?
Me: Yeah
My sister: So Hillary would be VeePee?
Me: Yeah
My sister: That would still make crazy history!
I laugh hysterically
Me: I'm going to put this on my blog

Actors get a break that actually helps!
We all know how notorious the entertainment industry is into converting star-dreaming hopefuls into smoking chimneys (links to short film on how to quit smoking). It’s well known that addiction to smoking rises out of lots of film sets. But completely unrelated; actors will now be getting an even bigger tax-break than before. This is huge news.

Monsoon
Monsoon is in full effect here in India. Rains start and never stop for a few months. It seems you have gaps of a few moments here and there, but for the most part, this season does not have an end in sight once it starts.

Bring the traffic noise
Traffic noise in Mumbai is loud. Very loud. It caused me to think, “that’s a lot of noise, maybe we can create energy out of it.” A physicist friend of mine is looking into it now. But here’s some basic information on traffic noise.

Street vendors in India go Fresh Direct style
Baa (grandma): Today the vegetable vendor asked me, "why do you walk so much to get the vegetables, take down my cell phone number I'll have the veggies you need delivered to your house."
Me: Whoa! The street vendors that sell vegetables have delivery networks and cell phones?
Sister: If the paanwalla has a cell phone, obviously the vegetable guy will too

American (journalists) know diddly
Every time I come to India or visit any other foreign country like France or England, one thing becomes stupidly clear. Americans do not know much about anything except for their own lives. While that’s true for a majority of the people around the world, it’s grossest and most self-involved form emerges from the States. People in India are well aware of what’s going on in the...

Conversion from Rs. to Dollars
Happy June 1st. As a responsible planner of my finances, it’s mandatory to regularly check up on my online banking status. The rewarding part about being in India and doing so is rejoicing at how little everything costs. My recent trip to the movies $6 - that includes popcorn, soda and tickets for 2. My recent visit to the United Colors of Benneton where I purchased a super nice shirt,...
