Rickshaw accident
The funny part of this post is that the rickshaw accident from earlier this morning was nearly a non-event - I almost didn’t write about it. The drivers here are crazy and people cut one another off on a regular basis. If you’ve experienced the worst NYC traffic in peak hours, that’s a breeze compared to driving in Bombay at any time of the day. So our rickshaw was driving down...

Dear Director, Please undo my close up!
Actress to Dhaval: I would really appreciate it if you removed my full name from the description of the "video name withheld" youtube video. I understand you wanting to share your work online however I do not want my name associated with the video. The video comes up whenever people do google searches and given I'm in a completely different profession I dont want existing or future employers seeing me in that video. This is the second email I have sent you regarding this. I never signed a release and so given the circumstances you should honor my request. I dont want to make this a bigger issue than it is. Please remove it.
Dhaval: I didn't receive the first request. I'll remove it shortly. I'm currently in India with limited Internet access. Sorry for the hassle. peace!

Dude slaps girl in front of coffee shop
This girl and her friend - both around the age of 18-21 were sitting at a Cafe Coffee Day (CCD); a chain of coffee houses in India. This was in Kandivali, a suburb of Mumbai. After a while they got up and went to sit outside where the smokers sit. There was a dude who came and started talking to them. The rest of it I didn’t watch on my own, but the entire staff of the CCD started glaring...

The best Jain food in the world
My sister and I just ate at this place called “Little Italy” in Kandivali. It’s a chain of 100% vegetarian restaurants that started in the Juhu section of Mumbai. They serve alcohol at these establishments so that aspect of it is the only non-Jain aspect about the restaurant. Jains do not eat certain types of root vegetables - primarily we don’t intake onions, garlic or...

Want to Marry me? Pay me!
It’s every young man’s dream to get married and get paid on top of it. What’s that? That concept has never entered your mind? Welcome to the traditional Indian custom of dowry. Though not as commonplace as it once used to be, this system of the bride’s parents and family members giving a ton of money + gifts is still in play.  The other day on my rickshaw ride, the...

I don’t have the resources of CBS News but just yesterday I was wondering what the progress was on flying cars. Lucky for me, CBS News was on the story for fans of the juicy show.

Monologue
It's going to start raining in India soon. We saw some rain drops the other night. Mangoes here are super tasty. I don't necessarily miss New York. I'm ready for whatever comes next. No one's up at 5: 24 am in NYC.

Iron Man (Film Review)
Dude, Iron Man was nothing short of awesome. Absolutely incredible use of special effects, tastefully executed action sequences, it was one of the most engaging super-hero films in a long time. Taking a super-hero of 50 years or more and putting it into relevant current event terms is not an easy task. But Marvel’s first independent venture with Bronx Science alumnus Jon Favreau helming...

Samrat
The last time I went to Samrat was in 1989. I went back yesterday afternoon and had an amazing lunch. I had rumali roti, paneer with green peppers, masala papad and a fresh lime soda.   Simply amazing. The prices went higher than before to Rs. 140 per main vegetable or about $3.50. So, all in all pretty damn cheap. The meal for 2 people was Rs. 413 or a little more than $10. And this was one of...

Rickshaw meters turn super fast
My grandfather refused to pay the rickshaw fare from Sahara airport to Kandivali (another section of Bombay.) The reason he refused was that the price was Rs. 20 (.50 cents) higher than when we went to the airport. Now this may seem like a laughable amount, which it is, but there’s enough value on both sides (the companies who deliberately fix the meters so they move faster) and the...

India - Day 1
Got to India last night. The airport in Bombay is much cleaner than it used to be but the corruption still persists. Old retiring baggage handlers have turned into bribe seeking maniacs. So anytime a foreigner lands they ask for money - in return for a secure pass through to customs. The key is to do what I did - IGNORE THEM - and just keep moving. Customs doesn’t charge anything for your...

8 Femmes (Film Review)
Can you imagine a semi-musical version of “Clue” without Tim Curry and in French? Francois Ozon’s funny murder mystery is just that. Everyone’s closet is filled with egregiously dirty secrets. These people being French, the stakes are higher than normal. That’s one thing about French cinema - their values and morals are on a different plane for the most part than the...
